James Sheep, the Penn State Nittany Lion mascot since January 2007, has been suspended from his position until December 31st due to his arrest for driving under the influence (BAC .164) late last month. Due to his suspension, he will not travel with the team to the Rose Bowl on New Years Day.
James has been a very enthusiastic and hard-working Nittany Lion, but we are disappointed that his recent actions did not represent the high standards of this position, said cheerleading coach Curt White. We are planning to have James resume his duties in the new year and are confident that he will represent Penn State Athletics and the University with a high level of energy, dedication and respect.
Planning to retire after this year, Sheep revealed his face to cheers from Penn State football fans at the last home game of the season. According to the mascot, he performs at over 300 events a year. This would have been his first Rose Bowl performance.
